I am so excited to have purchased tickets to our first Men of the Deeps concert. We were able to get front & center row seats. My husband, Darrold is a disabled coal miner from West Virginia. He worked in the mines for over 20 years. He moved here to Canada in 2000 and that is when I introduced him to your music. Have seen your performances twice, once at Miner’s Museum in Glace Bay and last October in Trail BC. The CD I bought in Trail is just about worn out already from playing it. I am really moved by Bobby and Jim’s rendition of the Ballad of Joe Hill. Just listening to your songs reminds me of one of the most beautiful areas I have ever seen, Cape Breton. I am watching the documentary about the Men of the Deeps. My grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather and his father were all coal miners. My father moved with his family to Ontario when he was 13, the youngest of five. Through genealogical research, I have found many more ancestors on my father’s side that were coal miners as well, into England. I want to thank you for the documentary and the songs. They bring the history alive and make me feel proud to be a descendant of a person that had done this for their lives. I feel proud of my heritage and LOVE the accents. I used to visit Cape Breton as a child often in the summers and I can honestly say that it makes me homesick. I want to be there so badly.

My Mother, 3 year old daughter, and I attended your show last night at the Jettie Baker Center. It was extraordinary. Your songs were particularly touching for my mother, as her father was killed in a mining accident in West Virginia. True confession time — I was my Mom’s escort to your concert today at Casino Rama. Since my musical taste differs from my Mom’s, I did not expect to enjoy myself, but I DID! Fabulous,FABULOUS show! Just saw you guys at St.Johns church tonite. What a great concert. Thanks to you all and especally to Jim. My son Connor really was amazed at the fact that you worked with his Grandfather. He didn’t meet his grandfather as he died before he was born. The things you said were so nice about Johnny. It made us so happy to hear them. His only Grandson was really impressed. Oct. 23: Springhill, N.S., marks 50th Anniversary of 1958 mining disaster. For Dad, Doug Henwood who made it out of the mine in ’58. And in memory of Victor Henwood (died in the mine ’56 Explosion), Harlan Henwood (died in the ’58 bump) and James Noiles (survived the ’58 bump, died Oct. 18, ’07)-thank you to the bareface miners & draegermen who brought Jim out and allowed him to be here to raise his two sons. A total of 424 men and boys lost their lives in the Springhill Mines from the beginning of the coal operations until the final closure in 1971. “Down in the dark of the Cumberland Mine there’s blood on the coal and the miners lie”
