My sisters and I took our parents to see the show at the Centennial Auditorium in S’toon on Dec. 5. I’d never even heard of the Men of the Deeps, but now that I have, I I’ll never forget them. It was absolutely amazing! Although the music is about the mining industry, many of the songs put me in mind of my dad who is a farmer and no stranger to the back-breaking labour that built this county. Another wonderful performance with Rita MacNeil! Thank you so much for another moving performance. I love Rita MacNeil and “Working Man” has always been one of my most favourite songs. I dreamed of one day seeing her in concert with the Men of the Deeps. This was my second time seeing you performing with Rita and, as always, it was a wonderful evening. Entering while Rita was singing “Home I’ll Be” was perfect. Tears filled my eyes when she began singing and again when you entered the theatre and began coming down the isles. The first time I heard you perform was in one of Ritaís television specials and you entered while she was singing “Working Man”. It was one of the most moving parts of that special and is still one of the most moving parts Rita MacNeil and the Men of the Deeps. Thank you for keeping the mining heritage alive. We have just got home after attending a very good concert at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo, We are farmers and live in Cedar about ten miles south. During the performance I was struck by the similarity between your song about a miner who was executed wrongly it is believed,to the labour martyr here on Vancouver Island who was attempting to “Organize” when he was shot under mysterious circumstances.he was also young,His name is Ginger Goodwin ,born in Yorkshire England.There are several books on his life. He is buried at Cumberland and I have visited his grave there. The N.D.P. named a section of the new highway after him up that way ,but–when this Liberal government came into power they removed his name from it. The union people here know a lot more about him than I do if you wish to have more information please let me know. hello from Calgary, I attended Rita and Men of the Deeps concert in Calgary earlier this week. It was a fantastic concert – however I’m swamped with work and wouldn’t have necessarily made time to go if my partner and I hadn’t been taking her mother to the concert. I was so pleased to have attended — the music was fantastic, as were the stories. The concert made me happy and proud to have my family roots in the Maritimes (Old Barns, Nova Scotia), and equally proud to be a trade unionist. Thank you for the music, the stories, and for reminding your audiences that working men and women and their trade unions have built this country and fought hard for the rights, freedoms and benefits that my generation now enjoys (and too often takes for granted). Thank you for coming with Rita to Calgary. I love the Men Of The Deeps so much. I was sad to hear the mines were now closed. But when Rita finished he second set with “Working Man”, I noticed that all the former miners sang with louder voices. I hope that The Men Of The Deeps comes back to Calgary on their own. I love all your music. Reminds me of home whenever I listen. I am originally from New Waterford, and I have family that have lost their jobs because of the closing of the mines. It was such a terrible loss to a small community that relied on the mines.
