I sit here this evening listening to your album Diamonds in the Rough and decided to do a search and have landed here. I bought my father your very first album when I was a youngster. The last song on one of the sides is Dark as a Dungeon. That song means so much to me when I hear it now. My Dad spoke to me about the coal mines in Inverness and New Waterford. I likely would have ended up a coal miner if there was one around when I became of age. My Dad passed 1 month before his 65th birthday of Black Lung and Rita MacNeils song hits me in the soft spot. I can not say thank you enough for your songs and beautiful performances. It keeps the memories of all the sons and Dads that have been down in the coal mines and the respect that they all deserve. Cocluding our conference with the Men of the Deeps marching in to the darkened ballroom with their hard hat head lamps on….AMAZING….it seems there was not a dry eye in the house. I was so moved as my Grandfather was killed in a mining accident in nearby New Waterford in the 50’s. My Nan was left a widow with ten kids to look after. She died last year at age 92 and I so miss visiting her when I go to Cape Breton. This mining choir tribute was as moving for me as the funeral last year. The final selection “We rise again” with nearly all 200 people together standing in a long ribbon waving their hands held high was incredibly moving. Certainly very uplifting….a force of so many. Everyone I greeted was so pleased with our sponsorship. Thank you Men of the Deeps.
