We’re attending your April 6, 2016 at the Sanderson Theatre in Brantford, Ontario. I’m married to a coal miner’s daughter, born and raised in Sunderland, England. Her father was strong like a horse and, because of his intense physical labour, he also ate like a horse! Her family triumphed over some darker days when he was sick or off the job due to an injury. He did what he did, no complaints, for Marie and her brother and sister and his wife, well past what we would today refer to as the age of retirement.
We too would love to meet with the performers after the performance. If this isn’t possible perhaps a casual mention of Marie and her “da” could be made during their performance?

I took in the April 2/16 show this afternoon at Belleville’s Empire Theatre. I loved it. The selection of songs was awesome and the words of a few brought a tear to my eye. But when Stephen Muise read the letter written by a granddaughter of a miner who had lost his life a number of years ago in a mine explosion and the Miners followed up by singing her favourite song, the whole audience was moved. It was a nice touch with some of the stories and of the jokes.

So pleased to be in the audience at the new PAC in St Catharines to enjoy the Men of the Deeps performance. It is always a pleasure and a moving experience whenever I hear those stories and songs.I first heard the men’s choir at a rehearsal session in 1977. John (Jack) O’Donnell was the professor of a history of music course at the university in Antigonish. My friend from New Waterford,whose father had been a miner,was also taking the music course. She asked Mr. ODonnell if we could drive down with him and listen to the choir rehearse. He said you are welcome to come and off we went. The conversation along the way was about music and many other topics of interest. I was sorry Mr. O’Donnell was unable to be part of this tour and wish him a speedy recovery.

My mother and I went to the Milton performance last night. The depth and colour of your singing is wonderful. The richness of your harmonies was heard in a number of the songs. I don’t think the sound system was set up very well though.
We have family in Cape Breton along the Margaree, in Twin Rock Valley and Scotsville. Even though there is no mining history in our family, it is a thread in the fabric that is our heritage.

We have enjoyed many concerts. The most memorable was at the Elora Festival in the Gambrel barn in Elora, Ontario in the 90’s. After the concert ‘the men’ and their wives came back to our home for a ‘mini ceilidh’ in our kitchen for a reception of about 100 people. They sang again and we had smoked salmon shrimp oysters etc. It was so memorable for so many. Maybe some of the choristers will remember. I remember the first concert held at the Paramount theatre I’m New Waterford.
The opening night of the NS International Tatoo.
Taping a Christmas Special with Anne Murray and Alan Thicke in Dartmouth.
My dad, Dave was one of the originals of the chorus and as a result I had the privilege of attending so many of the significant events that the guys participated in.

Since moving to Louisbourg 18 mos. ago, I enjoyed my 3rd concert of MOD last evening at The Playhouse.
Immigrant Eyes is very special to me as my grandpa worked the mines in Lancashire, Eng. and then looking for a better life in the early ’30s, moved his young family to Canada where he then worked the mines in Fernie, B.C. Saturday September 6, 2014 a man came into the gift shop at the Northumberland Ferries terminal at Caribou Wharf. We struck up a conversation about music and I asked him if he had the opportunity to sing with Rita MacNeil. He drew me into his emotional grief as he talked about the day he heard of Rita’s passing. I did not know Rita nor did I ever meet her but the genuine tone and admiration in this man’s voice had me feeling overwhelmed that I was starting to get choked up myself. Because of his words, he had me missing Mrs. MacNeil all over again, as if we were close friends. To this man in the gift shop, thank you for the conversation.

1970,1971 I drilled and blasted ,mucked-out a stope at 3000 ft for Inco,Levack,north of Sudbury. Nickel +copper ore. Just before Christmas 3 miners at Frood Stoby mine at 6000 ft lost their lives in a scoop tram area when the roof fell in. The wife and I saw the Men of the Deeps with Rita when they were in Oshawa circa 1998.WE were watching a TV show and saw them again. My dad didn’t work in the minds, but he worked for a cement plant. He left everyday for work with his hard hat and his lunch box. Every time I listen to The Working Man, it brings tears to my eyes as I remember my Dad who died at 67 due to the cement he breathed in all those 30 plus years he worked there to provide a good life for our family. I miss him every day.

Your choir is amazing, one of the best experiences I have ever had. All the men seem so warm hearted and genuine. I saw the group at the Britania Mining museum just outside of Vancouver. I feel very priviledged to have experienced their touching performance in a very appropriate locaiton. I do hope they come back to Vancouver one day and I hope that the tradition will continue on as it is very unique and special. I was very touched and priviledged to see and talk to the group. Hi, I first saw your group singing Working Man with Rita Mac Neil about 10 years ago and I was so moved by the beaty of the words the majesty of the sound and the solidarity of the picture I saw.
