In 1966, a newly formed coal miners’ chorus stepped onto the stage of the historic Savoy Theatre for the very first time. Sixty years to the day, they return to that very same stage for a milestone celebration as one of Canada’s most iconic cultural groups.
On Sunday, November 1, at 7 PM, the Men of the Deeps will be celebrated with a 60th-anniversary gala, aptly named Diamond Sunset, at the Savoy Theatre. The name reflects both the coal that shaped their story and the diamond it can become under pressure over time, a fitting symbol for a group forged through decades of shared history. And while a sunset marks the close of a day, no sunset falls without a dawn, making this not only a celebration of where they’ve been, but a clear step forward into what comes next.

For one show only, this special evening will feature a stellar lineup of tribute performances by celebrated artists, alongside appearances by the Men themselves. The event will be hosted by Cape Breton royalty and promises an unforgettable night of music, storytelling, a few surprises, and moments reserved exclusively for the night itself.
Guests in attendance will be the first to experience the release of the Men of the Deeps’ brand new double CD collection, featuring 20 tracks spanning the group’s 60-year history. Voices of the past sing alongside voices of the present in defiance of time itself, offering listeners the unique songs and stories of North America’s only coal miners’ chorus.
“These members of this have stood shoulder to shoulder for 60 years,” said Stephen Muise, conductor of the Men of the Deeps. “They’ve said goodbye to some, welcomed others in, and through it all, the music has kept them connected, not only to each other, but to audiences everywhere. On November 1, we celebrate their history, their strength, and the legacy they still carry forward.”
Following the gala, the Men of the Deeps will take to the road for the Diamond Sunset Maritime Tour, bringing their powerful sound and stories to communities across the East Coast of Canada. Travelling with them will be their new double CD collection and a 60-year legacy book, sharing both the music and the story of the group with audiences throughout the region.
