North America’s only coal miners’ chorus has been entertaining audiences around the world for the past 50 years. They have also done numerous television specials, radio shows, national and international tours and have nine albums to their credit, with a 10th on the way.

Stephen Muise, Men of the Deeps assistant conductor/business manager, says the group is looking forward to revisiting some great memories with audiences as they mark their 50th year.

“Sometimes, travelling on the tour bus is like going back in time,” said Muise. “They share stories of days gone by and experiences they’ve had, people they’ve met and worked with — but it’s all done with humility. There are no egos and everyone takes care of everyone else. Just like they would if they were all working a shift together underground.”

The Golden Gala — Celebrating 50 Years with The Men of the Deeps will take place at the Savoy Theatre, Saturday, April 30, at 8 p.m. The event will feature guests chosen because of their connection with the group and include Lucy MacNeil of the Barra MacNeils, Kim Dunn from Rita MacNeil’s band, Matt Minglewood and multi-talented instrumentalist J.P. Cormier. There will also be several guest hosts, videos, and a performance by members of Men of the Deeps.

An anniversary compilation CD, which is currently in the works at Lakewind Studios, will also be available for sale.

Afterwards, the chorus will be embarking on a Maritime tour as well as a national tour.

The tickets for the gala can be purchased by phoning the Savoy Theatre Box Office at 902-842-1577 or visiting tickets.capebreton.ca.
